Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury usually results from a violent blow or jolt to the head or body and is classified as mild or severe. Symptoms may appear right away or may not present for days or weeks after the injury. The consequence of brain injury can affect all aspects of lives including our daily function and personality. According to the CDC (United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), there are approximately 1.5 million people in the U.S. who suffer from a traumatic brain injury each year. 50,000 people die from TBI each year and 85,000 people suffer long term disabilities. In the U.S., more than 5.3 million people live with disabilities caused by TBI.
HBOT Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy for TBI, traumatic brain injury, in conjunction with intensive rehabilitation has been demonstrated to enhance the recovery from TBI and augment brain activity by reducing oxygen depravation (hypoxia) and neuroinflammation while increasing circulation in the brain. HBOT is the only non-hormonal treatment approved by the FDA for the repair and regeneration of human tissue. Six of the 13 approved indications are directly related to brain injury and wound repair relevant to treating TBI. Clinical studies have demonstrated the benefits of HBOT for TBI with the following:
Enhance Neurological Repair and Regeneration with HBOT TBI Treatment
- Reduces the effects of Hypoxia and Inflammation in the Brain
- Promotes growth and development of new nerve tissue or Neurogenesis
- Enhances Stem Cell Mobilization and
- Increases Tissue Recovery around the blocked or ischemic brain tissue
- Supports Neuroplasticity or Re-wiring of the brain
- Induces remyelination or regeneration of insulating sheath around nerves for better nerve
- Supports Concussion Recovery
Improve Overall Function with HBOT TBI
- Improves cognitive function, speech and language
- Improves gross/fine motor skills, balance and walking
- Alleviates Spasticity
- Lessens Frequency of Seizures
- Stimulates Better Eye Contact
Study: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy for traumatic brain injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major public health issue and due to its complexity effective therapies have been difficult to evaluate. Studies have shown that HBOT has neuroprotective effects in a variety of TBI models when administered at pressures around 1.5 ATA. Recent clinical trials favor HBOT as promising safe therapeutic strategy for severe TBI patients and it is likely that there may be increase efficacy in the mild or moderate TBI patients. HBOT exerts more robust and long-lasting effects in the absence of pulmonary or cerebral oxygen toxicity. The improved tissue oxygenation and cellular metabolism, anti-apoptotic as well as anti-inflammatory effects may constitute the multiple and complementary mechanisms underlying HBOT-induced neuroprotection.
